Du Bois traces the wartime Great Migration of Black labor north to industrial jobs, and the white backlash it provoked — building to a direct, unflinching account of the 1917 East St. Louis massacre, in which white mobs killed Black residents driven from the South by poverty and lynching only to meet mob violence in the North. Followed by 'The Second Coming,' a prose parable of Christ reborn as a Black child in Georgia.
