Maxwell's trial is a mockery — verdict without deliberation, sentence of death — and from his cell he watches the full machinery of the slave system at work in the lock-up below. Illness brings him a devoted young mulatto nurse, Allen Pinks, in whom he senses something hauntingly familiar. Hopkins pauses the story for her most direct authorial argument about religion, cruelty and national judgment.
